Chapel Art Gallery

Peonies, by
Dominique Richard

The Chapel Gallery at Mariandale Retreat Center is an art space which offers guests an opportunity for contemplation through the arts. It includes a gallery of 50 linear feet and space for three-dimensional art as well as performance. The works of local, national, and international artists provide the impetus for reflection and prayer. Most exhibits are topically related to religion and spirituality. The gallery is open daily to the public; exhibits may be viewed weekdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, and Sundays from 2:00 - 5:00 pm.

Opening May 25:

"The Paintings of Dominique and Elizabeth Rickard" will open on Sunday, May 25, 2008, with an opening reception from 2-4 pm.  The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will  be open through June  26.

Dominique Rickard was born in Troyes sur Aube in France’s Champagne district.  He moved to the U.S. in 1956, became an American citizen and earned a B.S. and a M.A. from Columbia University.  Dominique started painting full time I 1986 after 20 years in the fine wine importing business.  He has had various instructors since then but was most strongly influenced by the great Hong Nian Zhang with whom he studied for four years.

Dominique was elected to the Woodstock Artists Association in 1996.  He has been teaching oil painting at Mount St. Mary’s College, Desmond Campus, for the past ten years.  He has also has scheduled and organized all the art shows at Emmanuel’s Marketplace for the past ten years.  Although he remains computer free, his paintings can be viewed at www.dominquerickard.com.

Elizabeth Rickard has been the wife of artist Dominique Rickard for the past 33 years.  A graduate of Bellevue School of Nursing, she has been a practicing RN since 1967.  She began painting in the studios of Hunter College in 1964.

In spite of the dominance of modern and post-modern movements in art today, Elizabeth has always been drawn artistically to an earlier time, particularly the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  Her work focuses mainly on animals and landscapes.  Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun Rosa, Bonheur and Adelaide Labille-Gerard are her favorite artists.

Through May 14:

"THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY:  Landscapes and Floral Still Lifes," the paintings of Frank Cannas, will  be open through May 14.

Native New Yorker Frank Cannas was born in the Bronx in 1936 of Italian immigrants.  Frank remembers when, at six years old, his father caught him drawing on the side of his mother's dresser with a straight pin.  Instead of reprimanding him, he gave Frank a piece of paper and pencil and said "This is where you draw - not on the furniture."

Frank graduated from the School of Visual Arts' illustration program in 1958 and apprenticed with the Illustrators Group where he met illustrators Tony Kokinos, Roy Anderson, Guy Deel, among others.  He then worked as staff artist for Ross Art studios.  From 1960 to 1967 he was a staff artist for the Equitable life Insurance Company.  Frank spent 1967 to 1971as a freelance illustrator producing illustrations for book covers, text books, ads, magazines and children’s books.  He worked for publishers such as Dell Books, Holt Reinhart & Winston, Harcourt Brace & World, Western Printing, McGraw-Hill, Rutledge Books, RC Gibson Co., and Random House.

From 1971 to 1997, Frank worked in the art department at Philip Morris, illustrating full-color posters for the company's many sponsored sports events, such as Women’s Tennis, the U.S Open, Marlboro Horse racing, Formula 1 Racing, sail boat racing, bike racing, and Motorcross.  He was also commissioned to do portraits of Don Budge and Virginia Wade.

Frank began exhibiting in 1981.  In 1992 The Artist Magazine featured Frank’s work with a cover and an article about hard and soft edges in painting.  In 1996 he retired and now he paints for his own pleasure and for his studios.  He has won over 20 awards in nationally-juried exhibitions, and he is also a member of the board of the Hudson Valley Art Association.  More of his work may be viewed at www.cannasart.com.
