The Chapel Gallery at Mariandale Retreat Center is an art space which offers guests an opportunity for contemplation through the arts. It includes a gallery of 50 linear feet and space for three-dimensional art as well as performance. The works of local, national, and international artists provide the impetus for reflection and prayer. Most exhibits are topically related to religion and spirituality. The gallery is open daily to the public; exhibits may be viewed weekdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, and Sundays from 2:00 - 5:00 pm.

Opening November 23:  Visions of Two Artists - Sandy Brandman and Elaine Ralston

Hudson Valley painter Sandy Brandman received her degree in Art History and Music at the State University of New York.  She has worked in the music industry for over 30 years as a music copyist and editor in both New York City and San Francisco.  Her acclaims include copying music scores for major motion pictures such as Altered States and Fame, the revised score of Broadway’s production of Pirates of Penzance starring Linda Ronstadt, as well as working for the American Ballet Theater and the San Francisco Opera Company.  As an editor, she has repaired musical scores in the archival departments of G. Schirmer and Boosey and Hawkes.

Her musical talents include viola and violin performance in symphonic and chamber groups throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond.  Sandy also serves on the executive board of the Hudson Opera Theatre, as well as a full-time chorus mezzo-soprano.  Her passion for music has inspired her love of painting still lifes, portraits and landscapes of the Hudson Valley.

Her pastel work has been exhibited by the  Hudson Valley Gallery and the Gayle Clark Fedigan Gallery in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY; the Bendheim Gallery, Greenwich, CT; the Karpeles Museum, Newburgh, NY; Hudson Valley Pastel Society; the Howland Center, Beacon, NY; the Museum of the Hudson Highlands, Cornwall, NY; Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY; The Lycian Centre, Sugar Loaf, NY; Painters, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY;  Eric Jarmin Gallery, Newburgh, NY; Bertoni Gallery, Sugar Loaf, NY;  Desmond Campus Galley, Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY.

Recently, her painting, “Pear Ware” won an Honorable Mention in the Art Society of Old Greenwich Annual Show, juried by Daniel E. Greene, NA, PSA.

Sandy Brandman had the opportunity to paint landscapes in scenic County Clare, Ireland and Tuscany, Italy.  Her pastels have sold internationally as well as in the United States.

Elaine Ralston was introduced to artistic expression early in life with weekly art classes as a child.  She later attended an arts & music high school and then the Fashion Institute of Technology.  She studied pastels with Gayle Clark Fedigan at Mt. Saint Mary College and also at the Art Student League.

She is a member of the Arts Society of Kingston (ASK), Woodstock Artist Assn. & Museum, Kent Art Assn., and The Garrison Art Center.  Her work has been exhibited in numerous shows and was awarded 1st place in 2006 “Artists on Campus Wildlife Award” for a pastel portrait of the oldest of her 5 cats.

As an artist she believes that everything we see in the universe is vibratory in its being.  Each object vibrates at different rates and it is through our process of realizing these vibrations through color and light that certain forms appear to us.  In her art she tries to be open to this process and allow nature to speak to her on all levels and works to capture the essence of a scene using both her inner and outer eye.

Mission Statement

The Mariandale Chapel Art Gallery is dedicated to promoting spiritual and artistic experiences in a sacred space. We recognize that art is the expression of not only the imagination but of the whole person; body and spirit, whether one is engaged in the process of creating or appreciating works of art. As such, the artistic experience can deepen one’s self knowledge, facilitate one’s spiritual and life journey, and lead to personal and societal transformation. The Chapel Art Gallery is committed to promoting and fostering the arts, and educating the public to the spiritual nature and importance of artistic endeavors and works.
